A Versatile Athlete’s Legacy
Wild Rides TV posted on Facebook about the unfortunate passing of a 79-year-old athlete. However, they did not disclose the cause of his death. Walt Garrison’s football journey began at Oklahoma State, where he led the Big 8 in rushing before making a name for himself as a fullback with the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL. Despite being a fifth-round draft pick, Garrison spent nine remarkable years with the Cowboys, leaving an enduring legacy in the franchise’s history. He retired in 1974 as one of the top rushers and receivers in the team’s history, still holding impressive rankings in career yards per carry and rushing yards.
However, Garrison was not just a football player; he was equally renowned as a rodeo cowboy, his “first love.” He pursued rodeo alongside his football career, even competing in local rodeos, though this dual career was ultimately restricted by his coach. Nonetheless, his rugged spirit shone through, and his most memorable NFL moment came in the 1971 Super Bowl, where he contributed to the Cowboys’ victory.
Tragically, an injury during a college rodeo exhibition forced his retirement at the age of 30. Despite this, his legacy endures in various sports halls of fame. After the post, his fans left heartfelt comments.
