Bareback riding is known to pose a great deal of discomfort and danger among onlookers. Bearing no equipment and a demanding set of skills and agility might contribute to keeping a high number of enthusiasts away. Rodeo champions, JB Mauney, Jackie Crawford, and Luke Branquinho might just be in on the view but with a few varying factors.

JB Mauney retired from his mighty domain of bull riding later last year when he suffered a threatening injury to the neck. Though the incident has limited the industry legend from getting on the grounds, he hasn’t entirely slid away from the sport. In collaboration with Teton Ridge, Mauney has gotten around to hosting rodeo commentary. This time around, a glimpse inevitably veered around the thoughts of bareback riding.

Mauney recently hosted his ‘The Mauney Cast,’ alongside steer wrestling champion, Luke Branquinho, watching the American Rodeo West Regional. The show enclosed the run of events and a few quick interviews with known industry personalities. One of the segments welcomed 23X WPRA World Champion Roper, Jackie Crawford. While the champion has had impressive experience in the roping and all-around at times, she wished to steer clear of bareback riding; at least for a while.

“How much money would we have to pay you to get on a bareback horse?” JB Mauney asks the rodeo champion; stating that “there’s a price on everything.” Crawford’s initial response read, “Oh my Gosh. No. No. It looks like it hurts so bad,”. However, when Luke said $2 Million, Jackie was all in. When the three played around the idea and agreed it could fix some things, they also agreed better elsewhere: death.

“Not death,” Branquinho remarked when Jackie was listing the benefits. But to enthusiasts’ laughs and no surprises, JB Mauney revealed that would be in for it. With his record on bulls and injuries, fans would agree with the legend.

The rodeo fame’s will to brave through

Through almost two decades of his rodeo career, JB Mauney has been known for riding the rankest of bulls. Bushwacker, Bruiser, Pearl Harbor, Percolator, and more have fallen under Mauney’s qualified rides. However, the highlight of his career comes from Bushwacker. In 2013, Mauney became only one of the 2 bull riders to stay full 8 seconds on the beast. Moreover, the highest score of his career arrived atop the 3-time World Champion Bull Bushwacker himself with 95.25 points.

“Money doesn’t bother me. Gold buckles is what I am after,” Mauney told PBR. In doing so, the champion did not only ignite newer records but also incurred injuries ranging from broken legs to liver laceration. Nonetheless, the rodeo fame fought to the T until his neck injury forced him out.
