The rodeo world lost a young and promising talent with the tragic death of a 19-year-old performer. Seth Saulteaux, a resident of Ermineskin Cree Nation, was thrown off a bull at the prestigious Chiniki Rodeo Grounds. Saulteaux, a remarkable bull rider, had dreams of attaining the same level of fame as legendary rodeo Lane Frost. Frost died young, at the age of 25, after a bull hit him with its horns in the year 1989. Thirty-four years later, Seth Saulteaux suffered the same fate as his hero.

The young Indigenous rodeo star participated in a competition on July 2. He wanted to showcase his skills and make a name for himself in the rodeo world. The crowd was in awe of his talent and determination as he fearlessly mounted the bull. However, tragedy struck when the bull violently threw him off, causing severe injuries that ultimately claimed his life.

Seth Saulteaux had taken care of his safety before entering the competition. He wore a helmet that strangely did not crack after the bull rammed its horns into it. Right after the clash, Saulteaux was carried out of the grounds where the young man collapsed. The organizers had a doctor on call who gave first aid. Soon after, the ambulance arrived to take him to the local hospital, but he passed away on the road.

The EMS PRO, Pedro Ramirez, told Ponoka News, “It turned into a cardiac arrest and he unfortunately died”. Homer Holloway, a Nation’s Canada Day Rodeo committee member, expressed his regret over the tragic incident and extended his condolences to Saulteaux’s family. The sudden passing of Seth Saulteaux left a void in the hearts of all who knew him, as he was a beloved member of the community. They have taken to social media to mourn his passing.

Holloway reported that the bull that took Saulteaux’s life came from a contractor based out of North Alberta. He is aware of the fact that a bull rider puts himself in a dangerous position every time he steps into the rodeo arena. However, Holloway never imagined this bull would cause such a tragic loss. The weight of guilt and sorrow weighed heavily on him. But he does not blame the animal for it. Still, the rodeo community will not be able to get over this grief anytime soon.
