Magnus Midtbo is a former Norwegian rock climber who is very active on his YouTube channel. After retiring from professional rock climbing in 2017, Midtbo posted various videos related to his sport on his channel, very often with his girlfriend. In one such video, Midtbo’s girlfriend, Marte Knibe, reacts to an occasion when Midtbo climbed with ‘Free Solo’ legend Alex Honnold. Even before she started watching it, Midtbo realized that he broke a “hard promise” he had made to her. The couple adorably argued over its importance for the first few minutes.
In a YouTube video from July 2022, Magnus Midtbo sat down with his girlfriend to show her his rock-climbing excursion with Alex Honnold. Knibe immediately doubted if she even wanted to see it, due to the fear of the very promise that Midtbo broke. Midtbo, however, had different ideas about whether it was a “hard promise” or simply a casual one. Let’s look at their banter.

Midtbo and Knibe sat together to watch the video, when Knibe went, “I am not sure if I even want to see this to be honest”, to which Midtbo replied, “You’ve seen parts of it, right? You’ve seen a little bit”. Midtbo had actually gone ‘Free Soloing’ with Honnold at the Armatron route in the Red Rocks. Honnold promised Midtbo that of all the places anyone could go Free Soloing, the Red Rocks are probably the safest and best. However, Midtbo had exactly promised Knibe that he would never go Free Soloing.
What she took as a strong vow, Midtbo didn’t realize then, that it was a pledge. Midtbo himself confessed, “I promised you I would never Free Solo”, but immediately safeguarded it by saying, “But it was not a hard promise”. Knibe immediately disagreed and said, “It was a pretty hard promise..” with a shrug of her shoulders. The two then started recalling the moment they made that vow and eventually came to an understanding.

Knibe realized that she had asked Midtbo multiple times to “never, ever Free Solo”, and he agreed. But she also quickly remembered that he never shook on it. She said, “You didn’t like shake my hand or anything”, to which Midtbo gave a resounding “No”. Midtbo recalled the previous instances when he went Free Soloing and how it led to the moment when the promise was made.
Midtbo’s previous ‘Free Soloing’ experiences culminated in the promise
He said, “I have tried Free Soloing before, but that was like a very long time ago. I Free Soloed in 8A that was 12 meters long only….. and I also did like 6B and Gorges du Verdon, but that was like a long time ago”. 8A is the rock climbing grade given to the Armatron Route, which he climbed with Honnold and they were watching the video of it.

However, it was the Gorges du Verdon climb in France, which scared Knibe when she watched it later in a video. She made him promise to never do Free Solo again, out of fear for his life. Midtbo quickly agreed then, but as someone who relentlessly pursued climbing difficult terrains, he was never entirely intending to keep it. She eventually agreed to his side of the story and they settled the dispute.
