37-year-old rock climber, Alex Honnold, is one of the most celebrated personalities in the climbing industry. Famously known for his ‘Free Solo’ ascents to big mountains. Alex began climbing at five. In an interview in 2020, the rock climber once shared the support he got from his father during the early days of climbing.
As a teenager, Alex participated in many national and international youth climbing championships, during which he compared himself with the abilities of his competitors. In specific interviews, Alex admitted that he was never a bad climber, but that did not mean he was a great climber, either. He eventually improved his skills to become one of the best at it.

Alex Honnold first began climbing at five in the gym in Sacramento. He would climb multiple times a week by the age of ten. In a 2020 interview with Road Media, when Alex was asked about his early days of climbing, he stated that he did not remember much. In fact, he did not even recall the first time he entered a gym. All he remembered were vague memories of certain walls at the gym and his father helping to hold the climbing rope.

However, one thing that Alex remembered was the amount of support he got from his father. He shared the same in the interview;
It was my dad who always took me to the climbing gym, as a kid. He wasn’t a climber, so he didn’t exactly introduce me, but he thought that I would like climbing. So, he took me in and he belayed me, and he sort of supported the whole process. Moreover, when asked about his training secret, Alex stated that there was not anything definite.

The rock climber was previously criticized for his risky adventures. Netizens have condemned him for keeping his life in danger. However, Honnold has a carefree attitude toward such online notions. He stated;
That’s fine. It’s never bothered me. Alex believes that people criticize someone only when he tries to do something challenging and unusual. He thinks such negativity is natural to come and does not mind it.
