Mountain climbing has its own risks in itself, that range from falling from a great height to a frightening encounter with any living creature. A rock climber faced the latter ordeal in October last year. In an attempt to save its cub from an intruder i.e. the climber, the large animal pounced on him.

In a video that circulated throughout all social media platforms from last October, we see a terrifying encounter between a man who was climbing Mount Futago in Japan with a big black creature. Although the man narrowly escaped, the video is terrifying and not for the faint-hearted.

“Ahhhhhhhh!…”, the man yelled a few more times. It was the only sound heard in the video. In a loud and disturbing bellow that echoed through the mountains and open vastness, the climber screamed for his life. It was a bear, a big black Asiatic bear, who charged at the man and took him by surprise. While it’s not clear whether it was a Mama bear or a Papa bear, one thing is for certain, it was protecting his/her cub.

Animals in the wild (or any living creature anywhere) have an innate tendency to protect their young ones from any harm or danger. Even if something or someone is just a scare and without any intention to harm, birth givers usually don’t take that chance with their offspring.

The video shows the man climbing when out of nowhere, the black bear prances at him from the top. Getting his life’s shock, he manages well to avoid it at first, which goes past him to the ground. However, the bear isn’t content with just a scare and continues to charge at him from the ground, as the man throws punches and kicks to avoid being mauled at any cost. This repeated a few times before the bear simply gave up or the man managed to walk away.

Feeling a near-death experience at such close quarters was a rarity in Mt. Futago

Such was the closeness of the encounter and the risk of death, that the fear was palpable enough for everyone who saw the clip. The man was breathing with a hard, heavy flow of wind as was clearly audible in the clip. One could almost hear his heartbeat, as it was pounding for the fear of his life.

The Japanese Black Bear, an Asian subspecies, is an endangered animal with less than 30 left in the wild. Its last sighting was in 1987 on Kyushu island, where Mt Futago lies. It was a rarity for the man to encounter the bear, despite climbing in an area where they are clustered.
