Adam Ondra is the pioneer of some of the hardest climbs in the history of the sport. At the mere age of 13, Ondra climbed 5.14d and then went on to set the record for the first 5.15d in the world. Ondra was described as the prodigy of his generation by Rock & Ice. It comes as no surprise that millions of fans look up to the 29-year-old climber.
Naturally, sports enthusiasts are always eager to learn a few tricks from the legend’s playbook. Easing the curiosity of his fans, Ondra once revealed his nutrition secrets and philosophies in an interview.

On August 2022, Adam Ondra appeared in an interview with Marisa Michael for Outside. Herein, ‘the Bubka’ spilled the beans on his philosophy of diet and nutrition. Ondra stressed the importance of hydration and nutrition. He revealed that if one trains very hard but doesn’t eat well, it’ll be difficult for the body to recover.
“It’s the whole complex really: if you train hard, you should eat well, you should recover well, you should sleep enough. There are all these kinds of things that help you recover faster, and eating well is one of them. Overall it is something that will help you to feel healthy,” the 21x World Cups gold medalist added.
Furthermore, Ondra spoke about the importance of eating well. He shared that there is no definite explanation or definition for what one can call “eating well”. Ondra believes that it varies from one person to another. “Everyone has a different point of view.” However, for the star climber, Chinese medicines are what keep him going.
Chinese medicines and hydration
Citing an example Adam Ondra shared that if he does not follow the instructions that come with the Chinese medicines, he feels colder in winter. Elaborating on the benefits of these medicines, Ondra explained that it helps him increase his water intake and keeps him hydrated. This in turn enables his body to recover faster whenever required.

Ondra continued, “Hydration is a very important part of Chinese medicine. There are many people that don’t drink enough because they don’t feel thirsty. I drink a lot. I feel it’s most important to drink during the morning, so I always start the day with almost half a liter of warm water before I eat anything.”

The champion further revealed that warm water makes digestion easier for him. He also drinks a lot of black tea and herbal tea, especially in the morning. Going the by words and experiences of the Bubka, one can conclude that proper hydration and nutrition is the key to a speedy recovery.
