In yet another rock-climbing accident, a devastated father mourns the loss of his son

23-year-old Jack Carne from South Yorkshire went climbing the Y Gribin range in Snowdon with his friends on February 4. During his ascent, one of the rock ledges Carne used to hold and push himself up, broke and let loose. Within a second of losing balance, Carne fell from a great height. A couple of his friends were injured too in this incident. But fortunately, they lived. However, for Carne, the fall proved too costly, not unlike a female climber who suffered a similar fate after falling down the notorious El Chorro in Malaga, Spain.

Richard Carne, although devastated, somehow found the courage to share this news with everyone. He wrote on his Facebook, “For those of you that don’t know, on Saturday 4th of February we all lost a very special young man, my son Jack Carne. He was climbing Gribin ridge in Wales when a rock he was holding onto broke away from the mountain. I just can’t explain how much I love him and how proud I am of him. He was my hero and he will be missed more than I can explain. It has been an honor to be his Dad”.

So many heartfelt messages that have really helped so much”.

Rock Climbing, with its risks and peril at every step of the way, has claimed many lives before. Back in 2009, when noted American climber John Bachar died after experiencing a similar slip and fall, from the Dike Wall near his house, his colleagues paid him the highest honor. As with Jack Carne, the several rescuers of Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organization (OVMRO), its chairman, Chris Lloyd, and all of Jack Carne’s friends, and his girlfriend, will forever remember him as a ‘true gentleman’ who went too soon.
