One of the world’s best flash climbers and a gold medal prospect in ‘Speed Climbing’ at the upcoming Paris Olympics, Adam Ondra, is already creating waves in the rock climbing circle. He is already an established boulderer, flash climber, and lead climber and has recently become a speed climber too. He has also decided to add free climbing to his oeuvre. For his first-ever free climb, Ondra visited one of the largest holes on Earth, and he didn’t have to go too far from his home for it. His fans went berserk in the comments section.
In a recent video, the Czech rock climber, Adam Ondra, shared the experience of his first-ever Free Fall from an abyss that’s 138 meters deep. The abyss is located in the landscape of Moravsky Kras, and it’s in his home country. Where people often travel long distances in search of adventure, Ondra found it in his native country. Ondra introduces the video before explaining the Macocha light hole (the 138 m-long abyss). He wrote in the description of the video, “It is often that people are traveling halfway around the world for an adventure, even though there are some epic adventures almost in your backyard”. The fans weren’t quiet after watching the clip, and here’s how they reacted:
“AO team is giving us “reel rock” level films for free. No clickbait or fancy collabs, no hyped trailer. Just another crazy banger of a video, respecting history and adding his own chapter. Thanks again! 👏”
“Stunning! Also love how full of history your videos are. You really give credit to the place and the people that came before you, it’s amazing. It’s not just about you doing superhuman achievement, it’s about the place, its magic, and how it attracts people like you!”
“Adam Ondra is a really humble person! He always credits people that did something before him.”
“It’s the first video, where I felt Adam scared. I guess even climbing gods are not immune to fear. Amazing climb!”
“What a great climb! I’ve been waiting for Adam to post this video since the ascent of Macocha has been all over local media. It’s really great to see an iconic climber climb an iconic route near my home.”
“Amazing as always. Seeing Adam searching for holds, looking slightly nervous, AND wearing a helmet, tells me that this was a serious adventure!”
“Only chill while watching this video. Props to everyone involved in the film, the pioneers of this line, and Adam for climbing this masterpiece. Just wow!”
“I really enjoy this relaxing style. Just silently watching you climbing, finding your way through the rock, is beautiful.”
While the usual comment sections under any YouTube or social media post is filled with both compliments and criticism, Ondra, on the other hand, just majorly received compliments. Praises ran from his humble nature to achievements to his overall human quality. Ondra has also previously climbed the Elbe sandstone of northwest Czechia at Labak, at the border of Germany.
Climbing atop the abyss from its sheer depth prepared Ondra a better climber
Deep at the bottom of Macocha Hole, there is a massive arch that was never free-climbed until Ondra did it. It is one of the longest and steepest walls in the Czech Republic and is tucked away in a remote and bizarre location. A very small climbing window in December opened up when Ondra did it. He posted the video very recently, though.
