The greatest impact might be found in Westbrook’s mentorship. He had a natural ability to shape and guide. So he guided the fencers who followed him; it can never be overstated. On the post over Instagram, one tribute heartily put it, “He was more than an athlete; he was a guiding light for all of us.” His words and actions resonated with young fencers, many of whom consider themselves lucky to have trained under his watchful eye. As one tribute put it, “The fencing community lost one of its brightest stars. We’ll miss you.” To the legacy Westbrook created.

Westbrook’s mentees, Ibtihaj Muhammad and Daryl Homer, both great Olympians, have credited him with shaping their careers and boosting their confidence that enabled them to excel. As Ibtihaj Muhammad said, “He believed in me before I believed in myself. He was a true mentor.” Other mentees as well: “He taught me that perseverance is everything. I owe my career to his advice.” The tributes continued, projecting his lasting influence: “Rest in peace, champion.
