Have you ever wondered what would a rock band of athletes look like? Athletes playing guitars and beating the drums do not sound familiar. Sounds crazy, right? Well, even before you can think about such a crazy idea, America’s four greatest sports icons, Michael Phelps, Kobe Bryant, Alex Rodriguez, and Tony Hawk, did something like this.

In a recently resurfaced video from 2008, the sports icons grooved to some fun music for a fun commercial. Stepping down from their shoes, the four icons delighted the fans with their fun transformation.

A blast from the past 

Michael Phelps was even seen without pants in the commercial for Guitar Hero World Tour with his friends Kobe Bryant, Alex Rodriguez, and Tony Hawk.

For the unversed, the said commercial is for the fourth iteration of Guitar Hero. Making the fans nostalgic, a Twitter user shared the old clip in 2021. Captioning the post, the user wrote, “Throwback to this Guitar Hero commercial with Kobe Bryant, Alex Rodriguez, Michael Phelps, and Tony Hawk. Legends all in their respective crafts. One of the greatest commercials of all time.”

The said commercial was an extension of the Risky Businessâ -inspired Guitar Hero. The ad, which premiered on May 21, 2008, drew inspiration from a Guitar Hero ad by David Cook and David Archuleta. For the commercial, Brett Ratner, who earlier directed the American Idol contestants in previous Guitar Hero spots, reprised his role.

Dressed similarly, the group of four can be seen rocking a pink shirt with white shorts. While Kobe has taken the role of the singer, Phelps is rocking the guitar. Hawk looks pretty serious as he tries to play the drums and maintain his balance on the skateboard; Alex Rodriguez accompanies Phelps with his guitar. For the fans to watch their favorite sports stars display their hidden rockstar talent, such precisely was fun.

Can we see the legends sharing the screen any time soon?

Well, it’s been more than a decade since the legends united for the fun commercial. Thus, it will be a great delight if fans see more of them. Having retired since the release, Michael Phelps now devotes his time to his family and philanthropic activities. Tony, too, is enjoying his retirement and enjoying his family time and is dedicating his time to society.

As for Alex Rodriguez, he is currently working as an MLB analyst for Fox Sports and is the CEO of A-Rod-Corp. For fans, video not just puts a smile on their face but also makes them miss the legendary basketball player Kobe Bryant.
