At just 23 years old, Mary Moraa, a Kenyan orphan, has become a name to watch in the world of track and field. Since her debut in 2017, this Kenyan athlete has been steadily climbing the ranks, showcasing her incredible talent and determination on the global stage. ?In a recent competition, the highly competitive Diamond League Championship, Moraa faced a challenging race that didn’t go as planned. Despite her incredible skill and relentless effort, she finished in fourth place but there was something more intriguing in it that made her feel victorious.

After finishing fourth, Mary Moraa’s boyfriend, Richard Lagat, stepped in and made her feel like the true champion. Mary Moraa had just arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport following her athletic journey. Little did she know that her life was about to take an unexpected and heartwarming turn. Richard Lagat, her loving partner, had prepared a surprise that would forever change their lives.

In a recent Twitter post shared by Track Spice, he posted a picture of Mary and her boyfriend and captioned it: ‘800m World Champion Mary Moraa accepts the ring from her fianc?, Richard Lagat, at JKIA upon arrival from the USA.

In the picture, Mary had just arrived at JKIA, and what she saw was truly awe-inspiring. Lagat waited dutifully on one knee, holding a rose in his hand and a placard that read, ‘Will you marry me?‘ She couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw her man on his knees, and she broke down and cried. Moraa definitely said “yes” to the love of her life. She said, ‘No words can express what I am feeling now. It?s a wonderful night.’ She further added, ‘Let those who were eyeing me know that the chapter is closed. That was a big surprise… I thought it was the usual welcoming ceremony, only to see him on one knee proposing.”

Lagat also narrated how he met her in 2021 during the National Police Service pass-out in Embakasi, and it was love at first sight for him. He was also happy that Moraa said yes to his proposal and described some of her virtues. ‘She is an amazing girl, easy to be around with, cheerful, humorous, and a good dancer,’ he said. However, Moraa has a glamorous season, winning all the 800m races except the race at the Prefontaine Classic where she finished fourth, citing sickness.

Track and Field star-making history

Moraa is a Diamond League champion and made history by clinching the gold medal in the women’s 800 meters at the World Athletics Championships 2023, which took place on August 27th in Budapest. She exchanged her bronze medal for a resplendent gold, achieving a blistering personal best time of 1:56.03 minutes. In doing so, she outperformed fierce competition, including defending champion Athing Mu of the U.S., who settled for third place with a time of 1:56.61 minutes, and Team GB’s Keely Hodgkinson, who secured silver in 1:56.34 minutes.
