Michael Phelps is one of the most popular mental health advocates in the sporting world. Phelps had himself been a victim of mental health issues; therefore, his goal has been to protect as many people as he can from the same. After his retirement, he is busy spreading mental health awareness so that no one should bear it alone.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic made more and more people vulnerable to it. In an interview with GQ in 2021, the Olympics legend opened up about how disheartened he got whenever he heard of suicide and death cases all over the world. Moreover, he also briefly addresses his goal in the interview.
The connection made it more painful for Phelps
The pandemic was a very difficult phase for everyone around the world. Over 66 lacs people died due to COVID. Several people went through anxiety, depression, and many other problems. Other than these, the most disturbing cases were the alarming increase in the suicide rate. Similarly, as a mental health promoter, Michael Phelps felt immensely disturbed when he read about all these scenarios.
While talking about it in the interview, Phelps said, “I hate seeing all of these articles about suicides. It literally breaks my heart, because I know what that feels like. I know what it feels like to not want to be alive. To see the other side of it, that’s important.”
Furthermore, he showed a few ways to people by which suicidal thoughts can be suppressed. He continued, “For anyone who struggles, being able to flip that switch doesn’t happen overnight but there are tools to help: Going to therapy, talking to people, reaching out for help. My goal is to help as many people as I can and drop the suicide rate. It’s a lofty goal, sure. But I want to save lives. I want to make change. That’s what gets me thinking and out of bed every day.”

Despite being the most successful athlete in Olympics history, Michael Phelps suffered a lot in his career due to anxiety and depression. And when Simone Biles withdrew her name from competing in the Tokyo Olympics, Michael Phelps came in support of the Gymnastics GOAT and said a few words.

While talking to the interviewer, Phelps said, “I think that the biggest thing is that we all need to understand is that it’s okay to not be okay.” He continued, “I still have days where I go through the struggle. I still have depression spells, I still deal with anxiety. It’s something that’s gonna be a part of my life forever.”
