Surfers are constantly pushing the extremities of the sport. While some surfers are making world records by winning competitions, other free surfers are creating new challenges for themselves. Jamie O’Brien is a popular name in surfing and is known as a man pulling off crazy antics. Likewise, in 2015, Jamie O’Brien did some crazy stunt in Teahupo’o while setting his board on fire. But his adventure was widely acknowledged when the surfer set himself on fire while riding the treacherous waves and was far from a mere visual trick.
Fast forward to today, the Hawaiian surfer sat with Brent Bielmann, a photographer who shot something similar to that of O’Brien’s stunt. The long-time friends shared their experiences about the wave-on-fire shoot.

The iconic flare surfing
While recounting their initial days, the photographer stated, “My first real job or boat trip was with you.” Adding to Bielmann’s words, Jamie O’Brien mentioned the Red Bull Minor Threat where they experienced an “epic boat trip” and talked about Bruce Irons’s amazing stunt with the flare while riding the “wave on fire.”
Notably, in 2011, the veteran elite surfer Bruce Irons used two flared and duct-taped them on his surfboard. This innovative surfing session happened in the Mentawai Islands and it looked like he had a ball of fire chasing him every time. The scene was well captured by Bielmann who created an amazing moment with his photography skills.

Later, O’Brien described it as “They had a flare on the back of his surfboard and literally lit up the barrel red and orange and was the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen.” Although there was a time when the big-wave surfer showed some daredevilry on the waves.

Watching Irons doing the stunt, O’Brien always wanted to take on this task but with his own twist. Significantly, four years ago, the surfer chose the most hazardous waves of Teahupo’o to perform this. He trained with a team of specialists before the challenge to make sure he was ready for it. And after several trials, they finally got to Tahiti to test their idea as a part of his web show, Who Is J.O.B.
O’Brien had a crew ready to set the fire while he was surfing. Later, he shared, “During the whole fire thing like what was the most dangerous thing about it and I’m like well I don’t know. Like you know Teahupo’o’s 12-15 feet on the craziest coral reef ever the most powerful wave ever and then you’re lit on fire.”
