There are numerous legendary heroes associated with the Hawaiian Islands, but there have also been real-life individuals who have achieved legendary status for heroic deeds. Eddie Aikau, a Hawaiian lifeguard and surfer, was one such individual who gained fame for rescuing over 500 people. Aikau is well-known for his heroic rescues, but he is also a champion surfer who has won several titles, including the prestigious Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship in 1977. In 1978, however, the hero of Hawaii set off on a journey, but a leak in his ship ultimately proved fatal for him as well. He trusted the Hawaiian people to look for his family, but his brother Clyde Aikau has run into some serious trouble as of late.
Clyde Aikau, Eddie Aikau’s brother, suddenly collapsed last week, bringing awful news to the Hawaiian people. He will need to undergo an extremely difficult operation. The surfing world as a whole is worried, and even surfing icon Kelly Slater has posted Aikau’s GoFundMe page on his social media in an effort to help.

With an aortic aneurysm, doctors came up with an answer: open heart surgery. Due to the high cost of the operation and associated medical expenses, a fundraising website has been set up to help Aikau pay for them. As the story of this tragic tragedy traveled across the surfing world, it eventually reached the ears and eyes of surfing great Kelly Slater. Slater, a long-time icon in the Hawaiian scene, stepped up when he posted a link to the elder surfer’s GoFundMe page on his Instagram story.
Clyde Aikau is staying in a Las Vegas hospital for the time being while he continues his recovery. The surfing community is behind the surfer’s GoFundMe campaign, which has a single stated objective: “We still need to get him home.”
