The NCAA Wrestling scene witnesses hardcore rivalries between several major universities. While these rivalries are usually very fierce, they often take a one-sided turn over the years. The Minnesota Golden Gophers found themselves on the short end of the stick of one such rivalry. However, The Beast Incarnate Brock Lesnar came to their rescue.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys enjoyed big winning streaks with several opponents back in 2000, something which they still do. A recent social media post, however, gave a throwback to Brock Lesnar for stepping up against the terror of Oklahoma State. In fact, he helped his team overcome a 73-match losing streak on 10 January, 24 years ago.

Minnesota Wrestling recently added a tweet to its official X account, giving a shout-out to Brock Lesnar. The tweet carried the caption, On this day in 2000, No. 4 Minnesota defeated No. 3 Oklahoma State, 19-15, to end the Cowboys’ 73-match unbeaten streak @BrandonEggum and @BrockLesnar had the final two wins for the #Gophers.”

Brock Lesnar wrestled in the 285lbs weight class for Minnesota and was a very formidable heavyweight wrestler. Interestingly, this was the same year when Lesnar upgraded his silver medal from 1999 and won the gold medal at the NCAA Championship.

While this moment was very big for the Golden Gophers, it was also a building block in the making of the WWE and UFC veteran. Today, Brock Lesnar is well-versed in several martial arts and has won the UFC and the WWE Championship multiple times. Interestingly, while everyone may think that the secret to this lies in his build, his coach revealed that the secret lies in his mind.

In an October 2023 interview, Lesnar’s wrestling coach at Minnesota, Tim Flynn spoke about the most powerful element to build a wrestler. He said that he was passed this information down by wrestling legend Jay Robinson. According to him, I think we wanna improve our conditioning, but I think another thing you always want to stretch is your mind.”

The coach further said, “If you can just keep putting them (students) in these situations where every day is a test, then when you get into these heated matches in the quarters, semis, finals in the nationals, it’s just like another day at the office” Flynn ensured that Brock Lesnar also trained under these conditions.
