Amit Elor, Team U.S.A.’s Wrestling phenom, won the gold medal last night. She won the gold medal in the 68kg division after defeating Meerim Zhumanazarova from Kyrgyzstan 3-0 in the final at Arena Champ-de-Mars. Therefore, Americans are on cloud nine, and it can get better today. Sarah Hildebrandt defeated Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzmán with a score of 3-0 to add another gold medal to the U.S.A. tally. It plots a curious snippet for the country. Moreover, 4x NCAA champion Aaron Brooks also looks set to unleash himself.
He will make his Olympic debut in the men’s 86kg category to claim more golds for the U.S.A. If he manages that, the 44-year-old rivalry with the Soviet Union decreases, with the U.S.A. catching up in the medals tally.
With Sarah Hildebrandt’s gold medal, the Americans gathered 58 Olympic gold medals compared to the Soviet Union, having 62 in Olympic wrestling. That’s five short of the record. Therefore, the situation looks bright for Aaron Brooks and Co. But the battle goes back to the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.

According to AP News, the Cold W*r in the 1980s had some tense battles between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. The rivalry split the Olympics wholly. Notably, in the face of re-election, President Jimmy Carter actively campaigned for the U.S.A. to boycott the first Olympic Games held in the Soviet Union after the invasion of Afghanistan by Soviet troops in December 1979. With no U.S. at the Olympics, the Soviet Union dominated the Games from start to finish.
With the Americans gone, the medals tally looked astonishing. The Soviet athletes won 195 medals, which included 80 gold, 69 silver, and 46 bronze. That’s the most ever by any country in any Olympics. East Germany came in second with over 126 medals. Thus, whenever the U.S. and Soviets (Russia now) battle for supremacy continues, the shades of the 1980 Olympics are fresh in their memory. All their sporting events remain personal. They have a chance to close the gap.

If Aaron Brooks wins a gold medal, that tally is close to 59 – 4 short of the most gold medals in Olympic wrestling. But when you look at it as a collective, the U. S has 142 wrestling medals (57 gold, 45 silver, 40 bronze). Thus, the heat is on for Brooks to bring the tally closer. He will compete in the 86kg category to defeat his opponents and claim another gold medal.
