Can anyone dethrone Jordan Burroughs in the 2024 World Team Trials? Who's got the best shot?

Everything has led up to this moment. Jordan Burroughs defeated Alex Dieringer 7-4 in the World Team Trials semifinals. The Olympic gold medalist delivered a stunning performance to eliminate the three-time world champion, who has since announced his retirement from the sport. Now, he must concentrate on the upcoming match so that he can guarantee his place in the World Championship.

At the WTT finals, he is all set to face Chance Marsteller. Marsteller defeated Keegan O’Toole in a heavily dominant manner by 6-0. He has outscored all of his opponents in a combined 23-0. His performances have been a treat to watch for all his spectators, as neither of his opponents has stood much of a chance against him. Thus, it has been set up as a heavily interesting match to watch, with both of them being desperate to win as this is meant to be his comeback.

The last time Jordan Burroughs qualified for the competition was back in 2017. During that time, he faced two-time Olympic bronze medallist Kyle Dake. It was a very intense fight as Burroughs had to come back after dropping the initial round, tied 6-6. But his resilience paid off, as he won both the later rounds 8-4 and 6-2. However, Burroughs now faces an even tougher challenge ahead.

Jordan Burroughs has fought Chance Marsteller a few times before. Their first meeting was during the 2021 US World Team trials, in which Burroughs emerged victorious with a 4-1 scoreline. The year after, they met again at the Yasar Dogu Championships in Istanbul, which went Burroughs’ way again. But this time, it was even more dominant with an 8-0 scoreline. Both would meet again in a best-of-three final at the X NYC. While the Olympic gold medalist won again, this time he dropped one round in the middle, losing by decision. But his victory in the other two rounds with scorelines of 4-0 and 5-0 was enough. However, this seemed to be the end of his dominance over Chance Marsteller.

They faced off against each other in the 2023 finals of the X NYC again, this time with different results. While Burroughs took the first match by decision, Chance came back spectacularly, winning the other two rounds 5-4 and 8-3. Now, as another clash awaits them, it’s difficult to predict who will come out on top. However, irrespective of the result, there are no doubts that the match will be heavily competitive, as both will be looking to replicate their semi-final performances.
