All about Spencer Lee’s parents, who are trained in Judo

Several may remember the 2023 viral scene when Cathy Lee, Spencer’s mother, literally squashed her glasses after witnessing her son’s defeat in the last seconds of the NCAA Division 1 semifinal match. However, the commentators thoroughly described her as a former member of the US Olympic judo team. Yes, she was the one. Interestingly, Judo the connection that made Cathy meet Spencer’s father, Larry. And the incidents after that were somewhat embarrassing for Larry.

In an interview with the Iowa Hawkeyes’ wrestling club, Larry Lee claimed that he met with Spencer’s mom when she was in France. Ultimately, Larry appeared there to hone his prowess in judo. But soon he had to brush that ambition off as Cathy Lee pinned him several times on the mat without shedding much sweat! Later, after Spencer Lee’s admission into high school, Cathy Lee used to jump into her son’s wrestling practice sessions. 

“There are not many mothers that were a workout partner for their son, but Cathy was a great drill partner for Spencer when he was younger. She was awesome for him to work out with and they both loved it,” senior Lee smirked. But all the attachment and inspiration stemmed from there. Spencer Lee idolized his parents and took a lesson from his mom’s raging attitude. Eventually, he came out as one of the best high school recruits of all time! But in the process, Spencer Lee may not forget Cathy’s sorrow after his defeats. 

The wrestling superstar’s mother’s profound disappointment

As per Larry Lee’s recollected memory, once Cathy pinned down Spencer in front of his high school coaches and mates, just by holding his arm. It was during a practice session. But the mother could never stand his son’s defeat at the competitive wrestling level. It was visible in last year’s NCAA Division 1 wrestling semifinal when Spencer Lee stepped into the ring to claim his fourth consecutive title. 

But in a turn of fate, Purdue’s Matt Ramos pulled off an unthinkable move by defeating the Iowa Hawkeyes’ standout. Cathy Lee was seen sobbing profusely on that occasion and squashed her glasses after witnessing that heartbreak. Meanwhile, the framed clip made her viral later. Noticing Cathy in the clip, MMA pro, David Rickels, termed her ‘Based mom’. However, Spencer Lee let Cathy forget that defeat with his victory in the Olympic team qualifier this year. Now, for Spencer, it is time to continue the legacy to gift his mother the victory moments that she loves the most.
