Chris Jericho is not an unfamiliar name in the world of pro wrestling. The pro wrestler and singer has made a name for many astounding feats. Including becoming the first man in history to hold both the WWE and IWGP Intercontinental championship titles. Additionally, he won the WWE title a record nine times. Jericho recently spoke about his aspirations for pro-wrestling as an Olympic sport on his Talk Is Jericho podcast.

The current ROH World Champion believes that even a scripted sport like pro wrestling has its place in the roster of games that are included in the prestigious competition.

Chris Jericho will take it up with the IOC

‘The Ocho’, as his fans have nicknamed him, said that he would go to the extent of pitching his idea to the IOC. He said, “I literally want to go in front of the IOC, the International Olympic Community, and pitch pro wrestling as an Olympic sport.”

 

The elite athlete is the winner of 22 individual championships. Subsequently, he understands the intricacies of the sport and managed to draw a parallel with existent Olympic sports.

Jericho added, “Now you might go, ‘How can you do that? It’s all [scripted].’ Now, hold on. Stop right there. Gymnastics, pairs gymnastics, figure skating, pairs figure skating, what is that? It’s two people working together to put on the best performance possible. There is no way we could not do the same with pro wrestling.”

The future of pro-wrestling at the Olympics

Presently, only amateur wrestling is a part of the summer games roster. The most recent champion was Gable Stevenson at the recent Summer Olympics in 2021. Previously wrestling Hall-of-Famer Kurt Angle famously won a gold medal at the event.

It would indeed be interesting to see if the 52-year-old American-Canadian wrestler, Chris Jericho, could stir things up in the Olympic community to bring forth a drastic shift in outlook towards pro wrestling. In conclusion, while the future is still uncertain, the possibilities are endless.
