Becoming a four-year letterwinner at high school and a two-time Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association champion in high school are big achievements. But, while they have their own significance, a Virginia Tech wrestling sensation recently experienced something new and invigorating.

125-pounder redshirt freshman Cooper Flynn was a sight to behold on the mat against Stanford’s Nico Provo. While Provo has pinned and defeated several big names in the NCAA, he failed to overpower Flynn and was bested by the Virginia Tech wrestler. In fact, he also bagged a major honor for winning against the mighty lightweight powerhouse of Stanford.

NCAA Wrestling made a tweet to announce the prestigious honor secured by Flynn. The tweet carried the caption, “NCAA Wrestler of the Week. The wild results continued at 125 pounds as Virginia Tech’s Cooper Flynn came out of Olympic redshirt to take down the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Champion and No. 4-ranked Nico Provo.”

Flynn’s matchup with Nico Provo took place on 17 December and ended up in a 5-2 decision victory for him. Provo’s defeat comes just two weeks after he triumphed at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas invitational event. Cooper Flynn had almost taken an Olympic redshirt this season and wrestled as a Hokie. But now, he has helped Virginia Tech secure a victory against the mighty Stanford.

Flynn showed a tactical display of wrestling by quickly securing an early lead, then stalling Provo. While the fourth-ranked 125-pounder usually has no problem facing pinch situations, Flynn’s defense proved to be too much for him. Interestingly, Flynn wasn’t the only redshirt Hokie in Virginia Tech’s team who won big against Stanford.

Another Hokie graduate who donned the VT singlet named Connor Brady caused an upset for Stanford just like Flynn. The 26th-ranked wrestler went against his 16th-ranked 165-pound Stanford counterpart Hunter Garvin. Displaying high offense and evasiveness, Brady defeated the top ranker with a score of 10-3. With the united strength of these wrestlers who chose to call VT their new home, Virginia Tech would look forward to beating more powerhouses.
