Home/Olympics

The US Olympic Wrestling Trials had some thrilling matches throughout the weekend at the Bryce Jordan Center in Penn State. Probably thanks to the cheering contingent backing their home-grown wrestlers, the Nittany Lions-bred wrestlers managed to triumph in several weight classes. The 97kg was no different as Kyle Snyder once again pulled off another major feat as he subdued Isaac Trumble in the final match of the category.

And now, Snyder set a new benchmark for his peers and for future wrestlers who wish to etch their name with the sport’s elites. By securing his ticket to Paris, Kyle Snyder has found a place in the national team for a staggering tenth time, a number that will surely go down in the history books, and people can hardly keep calm.

Wrestler and founder of The Wrestling Room took to social media to note what made the 97kg final match-up so exciting, considering the two giants who went at each other with hopes of representing the USA at the Paris Olympics. “Captain America is Mr. Consistency.“, reads the opening sentence of Mineo’s post. As the best-of-three match was ended early by Snyder with 5-0 and 4-0 wins in the first two bouts, Pat had to commend the 2016 Olympic gold medalist with another ecstatic hail.

For anyone, representing their country at one Olympics is a fable-worthy story. But it looks like the former Ohio State student has his benchmarks much higher than most. On the night that saw David Taylor bury his hopes of defending the Olympic gold, his training partner was able to make do with the opportunity at hand. Snyder’s claim to the national team was guaranteed when he won the bronze medal at the 2023 World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. However, the list of his opponents at the US Olympic Trials was stacked.

The challenge rounds saw N.C. State wrestler Isaac Trumble rose up the top of the chain with significant wins along the way, taking down the likes of Eric Schultz. However, Snyder was in no mood to play around and he bagged two back-to-back wins (5-0, 4-0) against Trumble to secure his place in Team USA. Snyder has had an impressive resume, to say the least, and with his latest win, he became the only Buckeyes representative to make it to the national team.
