Amid fervent debates surrounding the enigmatic “all I see is gold” persona, Jordan Burroughs has consistently dominated the wrestling scene. As he aimed to secure his berth in the 2024 Paris Olympics, his entry onto the US Olympic trials mat was meant to be the pinnacle of his wrestling career. But, what awaited him was beyond belief.

After the 35-year-old announced his retirement at the Olympics, the US Trials became a crucial event determining the fate of his retirement. Thus, Jordan prepared for the big event day in and day out. He even shed pounds to participate in his original weight class – 74kgs. On April 18th, Jordan finally stepped onto the Olympic trials mat. However, what was supposed to be an opportunity for him transformed into a setback as he unexpectedly announced his withdrawal from the competition.

To break the news to spectators, Justin Basch took to his official Twitter account and succinctly declared, “No JB today. Did not weigh.” Why? Even though Burroughs started off his wrestling career with two massive wins, yet he fell short of satisfying Penn State’s fans. And this seems to be the major reason behind his sudden withdrawal.

In the match against Mitchell Mesenbrink, Jordan Burroughs witnessed the audience booing at him for engaging in extracurricular activity. Despite ignoring the criticism and advancing to the upcoming showdown, he faced setbacks. On one side, he was eliminated as he fell 3-0 to Jason Nolf, and on the other, he once again triggered Penn State fans.

Why did the Jordan Burroughs face criticism?

To update about the incident, Christian Pyles penned, “Fans were repeatedly screaming that Jordan’s career was over… Really surprised that is the fan reaction after what could be Jordan’s last match and all that he’s meant to wrestling.” Even though many wrestlers supported Jordan against fans, for him, there was no point in staying in the competition. Now, he neither had a chance to advance to the finals nor was his performance anticipated by his fans. Pyles added, “Mark Manning and Jordan responded before continuing their walk to the team area.”

While fans were expecting Jordan to compete against his 2020 Tokyo Olympic final rival, Kyle Dake, in the upcoming match, his defeat turned their expectations into agitation. Now, Nolf will be going against the 2020 Olympic bronze medalist Kyle Dake at 74kgs today. Now the question is: Will Nolf be able to take over Kyle in the finals?
