The U.S.A. veterans wrestling team secured two gold medals to their total tally of seven medals won at the end of the opening day in Greece. U.S.A. Wrestling wrote a proud post and posted a picture of the seven medalists from Day 1. Their incredible performance and wrestling prowess helped the U.S. flag fly high on foreign soil. Among these legendary athletes, the two gold medalists from yesterday, Ben VomBaur and Eric Mittlestead, deserve special recognition.

The former is a resident of Colorado, where he runs an academy to train budding talents.  In his own words, “Wrestling is more than a sport to me. It gave me discipline and direction in my life at a time when I needed it most. Wrestling turned my life around and made me the person I am today. This is why I coach. Wrestling is a tool to make us stronger, better people”. With such a passion for wrestling, it is unsurprising that he should earn glory in the World Championships.

Vombaur trounced four rivals in a row to win the 62 kg title. Similarly, his teammate and fellow veteran Eric Mittlestead earned the 130 kg gold after defeating four rivals. The last opponent for the Californian was a tough challenge. Kazakhstan’s stronghold, Anuar Uxumbayev, was a strong contender for the title, but Eric Mittlestead defeated him 2-0. Five other U.S. veterans made the podium, with four finalists coming short of winning gold.
