Kamal Bey calls out the haters—Is Greco-Roman wrestling really that misunderstood in the USA?

When one thinks of wrestling, freestyle is definitely one of the first things that pops into mind! Fast, flashy, but full of flair. But amid the attention given to freestyle, a misunderstood wrestling style lurks. The Greco-Roman wrestling. The style has faced years of indifference and neglect. But not anymore! Kamal Bey, a proud American Greco-Roman wrestler, has had enough.

The three-time All-American star took it to X and said, “Yeah, no support from our own country but that’s expected at this point.” Fuming, he also added, “Screw it people too scared to try Greco should have no say about Greco. If you’re in the comment section trash-talking your fellow Americans instead of encouraging you’re the problem!” It’s not just about the hate, though—it’s about the division. “It shouldn’t be Freestyle this Greco that but supporting the people wearing USA.”

Kamal Bey’s rage didn’t erupt out of nowhere! This isn’t the first time he has voiced his frustration over the constant bashing of Greco-Roman athletes. “I hate how people badmouth Greco-Roman and its athletes in the United States,he said earlier. “I hate how the love is so divided that we forget, regardless of style, it’s all just wrestling. I hate that people forget we’re human and we make mistakes.” The pattern is overwhelmingly clear. People are disrespecting Greco-Roman wrestlers, and Kamal is standing up for his sport.

Historically, Greco-Roman wrestling has had huge names like Aleksandr Karelin and Hamid Sourian dominating. But in the US? Not so much. The sport doesn’t get the same spotlight as freestyle. Freestyle often overshadows the sport because fans view Greco as second-best due to its more limited techniques and slower pace. Additionally, the US hasn’t exactly racked up a ton of medals in this discipline. Kamal Bey, however, isn’t letting this go without a fight.

Who’s the voice behind the loud noise?

And if anyone in the US is qualified to speak up for Greco-Roman wrestling, it has to be Kamal Bey. The Illinois boy has been tearing it up on the mats since high school. He is a national champion in Greco-Roman wrestling with a dedication that is unmatched. One of the best examples of the same has to be when he moved to Colorado Springs to train at the U.S. Olympic Training Center during his high school years.

Bey’s career boasts a slew of big wins. He has won the US National Champion multiple times over and also has a Junior World Champion win to his name. Kamal’s gameplay was so aggressive and fast-paced that his style earned him a nickname. “The Human Highlight Reel!” Despite having an illuminating record, he had to watch his sport struggle to gain the recognition it deserves.

The outrage from the wrestler is more powerful than ever. But that’s what makes his latest outbursts so powerful—they’re not random rants. They come from someone who has spent years in the trenches of Greco-Roman wrestling. And is fed up with being treated like Freestyle wrestling’s disliked step-sibling. Despite these challenges, Bey hasn’t lost hope. He’s still fighting for change. “I wish for change; I fight for change in an ignorant wrestling community,” he stated. Kamal Bey’s voice isn’t just loud—it’s a necessary one.
