Nothing makes competition more direct between two athletes than a combat sports face-off, especially in a sport like wrestling. While this pits wrestlers of opposite teams against each other, friendly rivals also size each other up. Addressing this very topic, 3x NCAA Wrestling Champion Spencer Lee sparked a comparison with a fellow Iowa Hawkeyes wrestler.

Iowa Hawkeyes wrestling superstar Spencer Lee recently appeared in a podcast episode wherein he gave a take on several topics. A social media clipping of the episode showcased Lee dishing out an interesting contrast between him and All-American Austin DeSanto.

Wrestling Mindset uploaded a section of their podcast interview with Spencer Lee on its official Instagram page where he said, “The best matches I have wrestled were when I’d walk up and I’d be like, how do I even score? I don’t even know what happened. And Terry be like, yeah, you did, how do I even take him down? I wouldn’t even remember, just cuz you’re just moving, right? And that means you’re ready to go in my mind.”

While Lee said he is more of a go-with-the-flow wrestler, he talked about fellow Iowa wrestler Austin DeSanto who always goes in with a game plan. Spencer Lee mentioned, “DeSanto’s not like that. He’s always telling himself what he needs to do in his head, and he’s constantly thinking. Very different from me.”

While he compared himself with DeSanto, he also took this opportunity to give a key takeaway to fellow wrestlers. He said that every wrestler functions in their own unique way and that while no method is weak, no method is absolute either.

Spencer Lee emphasized that instead of focusing on something powerful, one should focus on what they can deliver more powerfully. While Lee advised fellow wrestlers on building themselves, he also addressed something that can undo their hard-earned progress, the horrid side of social media.

Lee gives his take on how to manage the dark side of social media

Spencer Lee said that social media is unavoidable these days because of all the NIL engagement collegiate and even high school athletes can get from there. However, he said that the posts meant for NIL engagement also bring a lot of hate from people. The 3x NCAA Champ said that one should ignore such comments and try to use social media only as a tool, and stay off it as much as possible.
