Spencer Lee is a national sensation when it comes to wrestling, and rightfully so. With three NCAA gold medals under his belt, the Iowa athlete is considered one of the best in the country. But, Lee’s final year as a Hawkeye saw him pulling out of the US Open because of a serious injury that required surgeries. While injuries made 2023 a forgettable year for Lee, it looks like he’s once again back on track for the Olympics.
Spencer Lee returned to action at the Bill Farrell Memorial at the end of last year, ultimately winning the tournament. Last month, the three-time Big Ten champ pulled off another sensational win at the Pan American Championships in Acapulco, Mexico. Now, with the Olympic Team Trials slated for next month, Lee shared interesting information about his health, which might bear a tacit reference to the competition he is about to bring to the table!

“When was the last time you were this healthy?“, enquires the host. “Sophmore year of high school,” came the prompt reply from Lee, and the host couldn’t help but gasp at the answer. “Spencer Lee hasn’t been this healthy since his sophomore year of high school“, reads the caption of the post accompanied by a stunned-looking emoji, encapsulating how the folks over at FloWrestling feel about Lee’s claims. While Spencer sounds hopeful about kicking off his journey on the road to Paris in style, his spot on the national team won’t go uncontested by any means either.

A long rivalry denied culmination once again
Spencer Lee will compete in the 57kg weight class. And that’s exactly what is shaping up as the biggest obstacle on his way to Paris, as Lee will face off against his arch-rival Nick Suriano for a place in Team USA. The ecstatic duo has clashed multiple times previously in a rivalry that spans back more than a decade.
Suriano didn’t show up for the Olympic Trials Qualifiers and fans were heartbroken. However, it looks like the final verdict will have to be postponed once again as Suriano will be entering the team trials in 61kg after having won gold in the weight class at the Pan Am Championships.

However, Lee will have a run for his money with Nico Megaludis of the iconic Nittany Lions Wrestling Club looking to prove his worth on home soil. The three-time All-American wrestler was the 2023 Senior Nationals runner-up and Lee will have a tough time subduing him with the Olympics on the line. On the other hand, Zane Richards of Titan Mercury Wrestling Club will also enter the team trials in the 57kg weight class with all guns blazing. With so many titillating talents lined up, who do you think will emerge victorious when the dust settles?
