Schultz opened his tournament by defeating Moises Perez Hellburg of Venezuela. Continuing with his run, he then brought down Jorawar Dhinsa of Canada, 6-0. Unfortunately, he could not compete in the semifinal match against Acosta Fernandez Yasmani. The injury default ended Schulz’s run for gold. But the battle was not yet over.
In his repeat match against Moises Perez Hellburg, Schulz not only secured the victory but did that in a lightning speed of just 34 seconds. The first day of the Pan American Championships ended for Team USA on a positive note as the Greco-Roman squad produced seven podium finishes with two golds.
