Can Amit Elor's gold at Paris finally tip the scales in the USA-Russia wrestling rivalry?

Switch to your screens, as it’s about time for the final showdown! For those who haven’t been keeping up, we got you covered! Well, wrestling fans have been buzzing with anticipation to see Amit Elor’s gold medal match, which is shortly due at the Paris Olympics. The 20-year-old’s impeccable form, especially her 10-0 semifinal round against North Korean phenom Sol Gum Pak, evinces how dominant she has been in the French capital. But today’s victory is set to be special. Not 1 or 2, but 3 possible targets can be attained via a single dart. Wondering how that is??

Well, if she wins the final bout against Meerim Zhumanazarova to clinch gold today, 2004-born Elor would become the youngest U.S. Olympic wrestling gold medalist, a title that Kyle Snyder currently holds. Plus, filling in the shoes of her senior, Tamyra Mariama Mensah Stock, who won the 68 kg gold in Tokyo, she would ensure the title comes home to the USA again. Also, it will continue her streak of going undefeated for the past 5 years. Yes, you read that right. As a senior, she is currently marching ahead with a 28-0 winning streak, her last defeat coming in the 2019 U17 World Championships semis.

Beyond Elor’s individual success, her gold would inch America closer to a notable mark. Currently, with 138 Olympic wrestling medals, the States rank the highest in the number of medals. However, they are still second to the Soviet Union on the table. How is that? Well, their 62 golds outnumber the USA’s 57. But with Elor’s gold added, they would inch closer to beating this total. And in the coming days, with strong USA contenders yet to step on the mats, its possible they breach this mark. Also, Russia’s absence from this Olympics, shall make it a tad easier. The door is wide open this time!

In 2022, Elor went through a challenging phase in her personal life. She had to cope with her father’s demise, a jolt that hit her suddenly in the middle of a global pandemic. The pain of losing a parent can never be easy. But, what made it more difficult is that the family had just suffered with the passing of her older brother, Oshry, four years back. After her first senior world win the same year, she opened up saying, “It was really hard to continue after that and just be OK, mentally.” But despite these setbacks, she returned in full glory.

Another obstruction for her in her career was dealing with the elimination of her weight class. After the 72kg bracket was removed, Elor had to adapt to 68kgs. She even competed with younger boys as a budding gymnast. How did all these things make her feel? Well, it did cast an imprint on her mind. Her mother said, “Once she started beating up the boys, there were a lot of coaches that didn’t like it.” She herself confessed that despite her accomplishments she feels very negative with herself.
