Home/Olympics

Tom Brands, head coach of the University of Iowa men’s wrestling team, had a bout of nostalgia after the recent showdown against Penn State in the latest Big Ten Conference. No. 3 Iowa was scorched to 29-6 by top-ranked Penn State. For the first time since January 2018, the Iowa Hawkeyes faced consecutive dual losses, with only Caleb Rathjen and Drake Ayala gathering notable wins.

After the tumultuous stride, Coach Brands took a trip down memory lane, particularly his uncharacteristic celebrations of the 1996 gold medal. Finishing in a near-flawless style in the 136.5-pound weight class, he drove through the shady night returning to Iowa City immediately.

In a recent interview with Kyle Klingman from FloWrestling, it put the spotlight on Iowa Hawkeyes’ coach Tom Brands, as he discusses his 1996 gold medal. The caption to the post reads, “Tom Brands got to work immediately after winning the 1996 Olympics.” Brands recalls his enthralling excitement was immediately infused with a sense of responsibility. As the interviewer posed the question, “I heard that once you won, you got your gold medal, and you drove through the night and came back to Iowa City. How true is that?.”

To this, Brands replied that it was definitely true. He with his wife had rented a modest three-cylinder Geo because of the lack of availability of vehicles in the busy Atlanta area as there was nothing else to rent. However, Brands did not choose to stick around for the festivities for long enough. Continuing with the next tasks at hand, he chose to return back quickly. “There’s work to be done,” which brought him back to focus on the next thing on the to-do list. Aged 28 back then, Brands had displayed his career-best wrestling moves with a 7-0 mastery against South Korea’s Jang Jae-Sung.
