Gone are those days when women were considered not equal to men. Today, with the evolution and development of societies across the globe, the stereotypical mindset has also been changed. In addition, Women are encouraged to come up on the world level as compared to men. Along the same lines, these days women are participating in different sports at par with their male counterparts.

Recently, the sporting world witnessed a barrier to break for women. New York High School, aligning itself with the changing social dynamics, welcomed girls in the new division of sport.

New York Sets the Stage for Girls’ Freestyle Wrestling Championship

Despite making every possible move, high school girls were not able to pursue freestyle wrestling. Even though some girls were interested in wrestling, there was no freestyle wrestling championship for the athletes. However, recently, New York High School girls finally accomplished their goal. In a groundbreaking move, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association has approved freestyle wrestling at the Girls Wrestling State Championships. NYPHSAA announced the news on their X, “The Executive Committee APPROVED freestyle wrestling for the Girls Wrestling Championships (vote 16-4-2)”.

Consecutively, by making this decision, NYSPHSAA has etched its name in the history of wrestling sport across the globe. Eventually, it was the first state and first school to offer a scholastic freestyle state wrestling championship. In addition, this historic decision will be aimed at empowering female athletes in wrestling. Moreover, this significant achievement would be highly beneficial for the new generation of wrestlers. 

How will this Major step empower Young Female Wrestlers?

Five years ago, New York initiated the journey to welcome high school girls’ wrestlers. Coaches, advocates, administrators, and the NYPHSAA team collectively drove the vision for this monumental achievement. In addition, the vital path was also spearheaded by Kyra Barry, who is USA’s wrestling Women leader and the chairman of the New York Girls Wrestling Working Group.

In an exclusive interview with USA Wrestling, Kyra Barry Said, “Five years ago, when we looked at the path for a girls’ championship in New York we knew it would take longer than other states; we also knew that NY was uniquely positioned to choose freestyle for the girls.” she added, “I am so proud of the hard work that New York coaches, administrators, advocates, and NYPHSAA have done to establish a girls’ championship that is centered on girls. Most of all, I am happy for the generations of girls who will benefit from a freestyle high school season.”

Indeed, this decision for the high school girls wrestlers would lead to a significant change. It will not only help in supporting women’s wrestling but also lead to the emergence of more women wrestlers.
