This week has been quite spectacular for collegiate wrestling fans, as it not only offered them some crazy sets but also unexpected results while keeping them on the edge of their seats in excitement. Interestingly, one of the biggest takeaways this week was from Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Michigan Wolverines. 

In a recent showdown, Michigan Wolverines’ Freshman competed against Iowa Hawkeyes’ Real Woods. No. 19, Sergio Lemley dominated the No. 1 wrestler and left spectators in disbelief with his latest move to add feathers of accolade to his cap of honors.

Michigan Wolverines took it to their Twitter account and posted a couple of pictures of Freshman Sergio Lemley along with a heartfelt message after he was awarded “Wrestler of the Week” not only by NCAA but also by Big Ten Wrestling this week. They penned, “Wolverine @SergioLemley sweeps @B1GWrestling and @NCAAWrestling Wrestler of the Week honors after his major decision over Iowa’s top-ranked Real Woods last Friday.

When Michigan Wolverines’ freshman first stepped into the wrestling arena, he faced one of the team’s most competitive matchups of his season. However, Sergio took up the opportunity and defeated the opponent wrestler, clinching 14-2 in the home finale. In addition to this, Sergio used two six-point moves, a reverse, and a late cradle in the showdown to seal victory on Friday while improving to 13-4.

This was Sergio’s seventh win against a higher-ranking wrestler and the highest of his collegiate career. Therefore, he was honored as the Wrestler of the Week to honor his unbelievable achievement. Interestingly, both Sergio and Michigan Wolverines counted their first with this weekly honor; while this was Michigan’s first weekly honor of the season, for Sergio, this was the first in his career. However, the unexpected turns of events did not end there.

 Michigan Wolverines rewriting history

When the N. 2 Iowa Hawkeyes entered the dual meet showdown against No. 12 Michigan Wolverines, Iowa was the favorite in the evening. However, something unbelievable happened as the Michigan Wolverines overturned history. After nearly a century of defeats at dual meets from Iowa Hawkeyes, Michigan, they finally made it to clinch a win from their arch-rival.

With the help of wins against eliteness, as in Sergio vs. Real Woods, Michigan Wolverines stunned Iowa by accumulating a 24-11 score. Now, Iowa Hawkeyes head-to-head records will feature 34 wins, 27 losses, and one draw against common opponent Michigan Wolverines. Will Michigan be able to take over Iowa Hawkeyes in these head-to-head records?
