It was indeed a phenomenal year for the Spartan Combat Athletes, clinching medals and positions with unparalleled precedence. Continuing their excellence on the mat, it was a climactic ending for Spartans marking their dominance in Wrestling. Team Spartan took to review 2023, notably highlighting the key performers under various brackets, as they achieved numerous milestones.

Lansing native Kyle Dake shined brightly on the list, taking forth his legacy and receiving the thrill of his lifetime. Spartan Wrestling took to honor the most memorable moments of 2023, honoring the wrestlers for their indomitable spirit. Let’s take a look.

Spartan combat athletes gain phenomenal momentum in 2023

Celebrating the best of #TeamSpartan moments, the official IG handle @spartancombat made a two-post series, honoring the stellar moments of triumph this year. Bidding farewell to 2023, the Spartan Wrestling relived the euphoria of their conquests. Part one of the post beckons the notable moments of Vito Arujau, David Carr, and Kylie Welker. The next part recalled the dominance of Kyle Dake, Austin Gomez, and Yianni Diakomihalis.


Kyle Dake took center stage given his sixth World/Olympic team selection. Dake has been consistently delivering in the wrestling arena. At the age of 32, his insurmountable energy and strategic resiliency are difficult to conquer. He won his fifth world title in September this year, clinching a silver at the Wrestling World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

Not only this, Austin Gomez is one of the most electrifying talents. Spartan wrestling celebrated his Team Mexico representation at the 2023 World Championships. At the Grand Prix, he also captured the 70kg freestyle title. Yianni Diakomihalis showcased his prowess at the collegiate front, concluding his EIWA tournament career with his fourth championship, along with additional accolades. It indeed sets the standard of excellence within #TeamSpartan.

For the Spartan combat team, the long list of excellence doesn’t end here. 24-year-old American wrestler Vito Arujau not only won the NCAA championship but winning the US Open was truly the highlight of this year. It bolstered his year, championing him to win more accolades.

David Carr also had a remarkable journey, making it to his second NCAA Finals. And, last but not least, Kylie Welker very spectacularly brought down her opponent Dymond Guilford, making it to the U.S. National Team at 76 KG. She had a phenomenal ending to her freshman season.
