Iowa State Wrestling will soon go through a big test on the road, as the Cyclones go to Oklahoma. While ISU will be facing a tough challenge from both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, the latter poses a bigger threat to the Cyclones. Looking away from the binary view of victories and defeats, however, ISU head coach Kevin Dresser lightened everyone up.
Kevin Dresser is known for having a strong character along with a great sense of humor. While he was preparing his team for back-to-back road duals, he didn’t forget to stay calm and relaxed. A social media post showcased him joking around and both praising and pulling the leg of Oklahoma State’s HC John Smith.

Iowa State Wrestling newswriter Jacqueline recently tweeted a video featuring a clipping of Kevin Dresser’s pre-dual meets on the road. The clip showed an interviewer mentioning the off-season rumors of John Smith retiring in the off-season. However, Smith didn’t retire and even pushed Oklahoma State to the fifth rank in the NCAA.
Stating this, the interviewer asked Dresser for his take on the matter. Dresser said, “ John’s a bad**s. He ain’t going away. I’m just telling you. He ain’t going away. You find the most competitive dude. We’re really close in age, and we’ve been friends for a lot of years.” The Iowa State coach then exaggerated things further and cracked a joke.
Dresser said, “But when the whistle blows and you’re out there, John will take your head off in two seconds, right? And not feel one bit bad about it. He’ll kick it around the room, step on it. And then he might be your buddy afterward, but that’s just how he rolls. And we know what we’re getting into.”
Head coach Kevin Dresser had high praise for Oklahoma State head coach John Smith this week when looking ahead to trip to Stillwater.

This friendly banter lightened everyone’s moods before the imminent and intense dual. While Dresser upheld John Smith as a superior coach, the Iowa State HC currently has the upper hand in the league. Dresser’s boys are on a winning streak against both Oklahoma State as well as Oklahoma.
