Iowa Women’s Wrestling team are off to a dream start to their career. On November 12, the Hawkeyes hosted their first-ever home match and it couldn’t have turned out better for the eighth-ranked wrestling team in the country. The team had three matches against Sacred Heart, Lindenwood, and Presbyterian and the Iowa Women’s team stomped through all of those. Sunday was a historic day for the college wrestling team and, understandably, they can’t stop talking about it still.

This is also the first-ever season that Iowa will be performing on the mat. After a great away week, all eyes were on Sunday’s home games and the program didn’t disappoint at all. Iowa emerged victorious in all three duals and was hailed by an 8,000-strong crowd for their memorable night.

The Iowa Women’s Wrestling team’s official X (formerly Twitter) account shared a short video clip highlighting some pivotal moments from Sunday’s event and things are looking just as thrilling as they did during the live bouts.

At their first-ever home game, Iowa crushed Presbyterian (ranked 13) 44-1 and brushed aside Lindenwood with a 43-0 win over the eleventh-ranking team. With two pins and six tech. falls, Presbyterian couldn’t hold a candle against Iowa’s superior display of skill.

On the other hand, Lindenwood suffered five tech. falls, three pins, and one unanimous decision going Iowa’s way before they succumbed to defeat.

These two teams are ranked below the Iowa Women’s Wrestling team while Sacred Heart sits perched atop the fifth position in the country. Sacred Heart gave a tough fight, but it wasn’t enough to dampen Iowa’s day by any means. With 5 tech. falls, three pins, one unanimous decision of 7-0 going the host’s way, and one forfeit, Sacred Heart took a massive hit to the face with a 40-4 loss.

More than just 3 dual wins to celebrate

While Iowa made history on their first home game with a cumulative 127-5 points in 3 duals, the gathered crowd also set some new records. With 8,207 present in the stands, it was the highest-ever attendance for a collegiate women’s wrestling event. With the Hawkeyes set to host another event in January, wrestling fans should expect more footfall.
