The NCAA betting scandal has become a hot news item after several updates confirmed the misuse of authority against Iowa and ISU wrestlers. Picking up on this trail, media houses have gone back to where the discussion initially began and approached Iowa Hawkeyes Wrestling’s Tom Brands.

Head coach Brands was suspicious of the way Iowa Hawkeyes and ISU Cyclones wrestlers were swiftly detained in the NCAA betting scandal. While Brands had asked the media to get to the truth back in November, he wasn’t paid much mind. Now that the media is at his door once again, the 55-year-old slammed them for their attitude and their greed for a hit news story.

FloWrestling tweeted a video on its official X account with the caption, “Iowa Wrestling Coach Tom Brands Responds To DCI Gambling Investigation Updates.” The video showcased the media opening the interview asking for initial thoughts from Tom Brands on the matter. To this, a nonchalant Brands said, “I don’t really have initial thoughts.”

The Iowa Hawkeyes HC further said, “You want a big story now? Where was the urgency to find out the truth when this thing went down and it didn’t make sense? That’s what I would say to everybody in this room… Now you want reaction and I’ll just be a real patient guy and we’ll see what comes of it.”

Brands alleged that the sports media was very lazy about this matter when it would have required them to do some real journalistic work. He said, “Where was this urgency to go after when it was a little bit of work because it would have been work. Sure it would have been work.”

Although Brands was ignored by the media before, he revealed the reason why he can’t just make any arbitrary comments. In fact, he said that while the appeals have been made in court, the chances of Iowa Hawkeyes and ISU winning those cases are slim.

Tom Brands gets real on the betting scandal problem

According to Brands, “We had two or three sets of different sets of appeals there’s no way that we’re going to win the appeal because of the precedence that was set with the other appeal.” Brands said this mentioning the appeals made against the Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State.

The media pressed him to answer more questions despite his liking. However, Brands dismissed them by saying that he had some actual work to get to. Listing the matches the Iowa Hawkeyes are scheduled to participate in, Brands asked the session to be wrapped up soon. As the court proceedings move forward, Brands and the Iowa Universities will await for the truth to prevail.
