Hassan Yazdani’s wrestling career reads much like a trophy fever! His story internationally began in 2014 at the Junior World Championships. He took home a gold in the 66 kg category, outwrestling America’s prodigy, Aaron Pico. But this was hardly a win compared to his breakthrough performance in 2016.
“I was thinking positive and I was thinking of winning, not even one percent of the time on the mat did I think of losing,” after his iconic win. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Yazdani won against Russia’s coveted wrestler, Aniuar Geduev, in the 74 kg division. “My mind was clear, I wasn’t concerned about injuries. I had my coaches and God by my side, which helped me to stay focused and earn the win,” he added.
But that’s not all! Soon, Yazdani transitioned to the 86 kg weight class, where he continued to collect his laurels. He won gold at the 2017 World Wrestling Championships. And this was no ordinary win; he had a near-flawless performance. He only conceded two points in the entire tournament! This was followed by gold in the 2019 and 2021 World Championships. But the list of laurels doesn’t end there!

What Makes Hassan Yazdani a promising Iranian wrestler?
Yes, of course, his strength is unparalleled. But it’s his unique style that truly sets him apart.! While most wrestlers in his weight class are short and stocky in terms of physique, Yazdani’s lanky physique and his long limbs give him an advantage while performing his double-leg takedowns. Let’s not forget that their unending determination and ability to stay focused despite all odds deserve an ovation of their own. 2018 was a showcase of pure resilience for Yazdani. He lost against the USA’s David Taylor in 2018.
