Is David Taylor's era coming to an end with Iowa's new wrestling prodigy on the rise?

The wrestling community has been shaken by Iowa’s wrestling program’s major move. The Hawkeyes have expanded their stellar lineup by acquiring a 20-year-old star, a wunderkind in the making, might we say? Many were surprised by the recruitment announcement, which had a significant impact on David Taylor’s prospects. Iowa’s squad strengthening presents Taylor with yet another challenge. Is this a clarion call for David Taylor’s OSU to wake up? Rival teams face obstacles as an outcome of Iowa’s most recent recruitment, which intensifies the competitive environment.

The wrestling squad of Iowa has welcomed Kennedy Blades into their fold, a talented athlete with an outstanding background. Blades is a member of the U.S. Senior World Team, recently qualified Paris Olympian, and a U23 World Silver Medalist. After she made her commitment public on Instagram, wrestling fans became rabble rousers and featured comments that were a mixed bag of sorts.

Blades gave a message on Instagram expressing her excitement: “I’m so excited to announce that I’ll be a Hawkeye! Can’t wait to represent Iowa and for the journey ahead.” Her move to Iowa is considered a tactical advantage for the Hawkeyes, who hope to dominate future contests with this trump card.

The wrestling program at Iowa, which has a rich history, hopes to take advantage of Blades’ skill and background. Her decision was made soon after 2023 World Silver Medallist Macey Kilty signed a Hawkeyes commitment. This only begets the question. How many more are they adding to their fold and how is this burgeoning move going to derail David Taylor’s chances?

Olympic gold medallist David Taylor, who recently was named head coach of Oklahoma State University (OSU), is currently up against a formidable opponent. Although Iowa’s recruiting of Blades poses a significant challenge, Taylor has been working hard to assemble a powerful team at OSU. But things went south, as was evident.

Christian Carroll’s transfer to Iowa State presents new dynamics in a notable move. Carroll, who committed to Penn and Illinois before attending OSU, has chosen to transfer to Iowa State. His departure from OSU comes with the arrival of 2020 Olympic gold medallist David Taylor as head coach, marking a significant coaching transition.

Carroll thanked OSU and shared his excitement about joining Iowa State on Instagram when he announced the switch. He stated, “First and foremost, I want to thank Oklahoma State University for everything they have given me. My final destination will be Ames, Iowa, and I am proud to be a Cyclone!” Carroll was a highly anticipated player at OSU. He was a recruit from Jimtown High School and came highly recommended.

Taylor’s objectives get more complicated when Wyatt Hendrickson, Dean Hamiti, and Cam Amine join the ranks of wrestlers following his transfer. Carroll’s move needs to be timed perfectly. The club has already lost two significant players since David Taylor took over at OSU: Sammy Alvarez and AJ Heeg. OSU’s starting lineup may be impacted by Carroll’s decision, especially as Taylor works to revitalize a team that hasn’t won an NCAA championship since 2006.

Carroll’s transfer to Iowa State adds another level of competition and clever positioning to collegiate wrestling as Taylor tries to build a competitive squad. With high-profile additions and coaching changes, the NCAA wrestling scene is always changing. The upcoming season offers fierce competition and intriguing drama as Iowa signs top talent and OSU adjusts to new circumstances.
