For wrestling fans in the country, there’s probably no news bigger right now than the prospect of seeing David Taylor come with all guns blazing to take down his alma mater from its high throne. After a disappointing end to his Olympics run last month at the Bryce Jordan Center, Taylor is likely to set foot in Penn State the next time as a fiery opponent. And he’s looking to make the most of the opportunity presented to him.
At the US Wrestling Trial in April, Taylor bowed out of the race to Paris after being defeated by NLWC star Aaron Brooks. The win once again bolstered Cael Sanderson’s status as an elite coach. Probably that’s what made the 2020 Olympic gold medalist think of a different strategy to make his legacy beyond reproach, and by announcing his new role as the head coach for Oklahoma State, he might just be able to materialize his ambitions.
In a recent post on X by Pat Mineo of The Wrestling Room, Oklahoma’s new inventory addition has been shared, noting how the time of David Taylor is set to kick off in style. “The David Taylor Era will bring in a brand new $40 million wrestling facility at OK State,” reveals the post, along with: “Wasting no time in making it magical,” – taking a cue from Taylor’s nickname that his fans fondly call him. Now, the three-time World Champion waits to test the waters as his first run with the Oklahoma Cowboys, and fans believe his former coach might have his work cut with Taylor trying on his new shoes.

Moreover, the present conditions of the country’s collegiate wrestling scene might be the perfect breeding ground for Taylor’s newfound career as a coach to lead new talent to glory.

The NCAA transfer portal is currently brimming with flair. Several heavyweight names are on the transfer list and looking for new squads. Amid this, Taylor might be just the person to seize the opportunity with both hands. Michigan State’s Cameron Amine to Missouri’s Peyton Moore, a lot of known faces have big goodbye to their former homes and are eyeing new opportunities elsewhere. In case Taylor can make use of the connections he has forged over the years as one of the country’s most recognized wrestling stars, he can urge the authorities at Oklahoma to bring some of these talents to the Cowboys camp in hopes of dethroning Penn State from its high horse.
Considering the fact that Penn State is looking to run away from any sort of competition with their third-straight NCAA victory, David Taylor might be the only person standing on the NLWC’s way to achieve a mythic status. Many former Oklahoma wrestlers have also confided trust in Taylor’s prowess to help the Cowboys rise in ranks from their current 10th position in the country. The OSU ended the 2023-24 season with a 14-1 overall record and second place in the Big 12 Championship. Now, it waits to be seen if the “Magic Man” can indeed pull off something miraculous in his first year as the Cowboys’ HC.
