Home/Olympics

In the realm of Greco-Roman wrestling, the stage is set for the 2023 US Nationals in Fort Worth. For many, this tournament carries significant weight, possibly even surpassing the Olympic Trials in importance. The pivotal factor lies in its implications for Olympic Games qualification. The victors in each weight category at the Nationals will secure their spot to represent the United States at the Pan-American Olympic Qualifier in Acapulco, Mexico, slated for February.

This is a crucial juncture for Team USA, especially considering the unsuccessful bid for 2024 Paris Olympics quotas by the six athletes who competed in the ’23 World Championships. Along similar lines, a new social media update has sent ripples in the sports community with a fresh highlight for the Pan American Qualifiers.

A recent Twitter update on December 15th is the star of the social media. The Caption reads,Greco-Roman seeds for Senior Nationals (drop-down arrow emoji)”. The post by the USA Wrestling account showcases WWE NIL signee Cohlton Schultz alongside other athletes who earned a place in the finals of the ongoing Nationals. 23-year-old Schultz’s notable silver in the Pan American Games in the 130 kg category has earned him a bye to Saturday evening’s final round.

The Nationals this weekend carry a unique set of procedures, favoring those who were part of the ’23 World Team. Medalists from the Pan-Am Games, including Ildar Hafizov, Kamal Bey, and Cohlton Schultz, enjoy byes to the final round. However, the top five in each weight category will qualify for the Olympic Team Trials, introducing an element of competition and suspense.

Yet, the limiting procedures mean that only four spots are available in the heavyweight categories, setting the stage for intense battles and potentially leaving exceptional competitors seeking redemption in the “Last Chance OTT Qualifier” in spring.

The history between the two adds an extra layer of intrigue, with Schultz having the upper hand in recent encounters.
