“Oh my goodness! Look out! It’s Ramos! He’s looking for the fall! If he just holds him here, he’s going to pull one of the biggest upsets in NCAA wrestling history… He did it! He did it!… And the king has been knocked off the throne!” These were the words that echoed from the commentators’ mouths when Purdue Boilermakers star Matt Ramos pinned Iowa’s Spencer Lee.

This win didn’t just shatter a 3x NCAA champion, but the longest unbeaten winning streak in NCAA Wrestling history. While this match concluded back in March 2023, the domino effect it created continues to live on. The 125-pound weight class has been the most unstable category ever since. Now, Ramos himself stands on the first rank in this category. But will the Purdue Boilermakers star be able to survive the flames he gave life to with his own hands?

When Matt Ramos first pulled off a win against Spencer Lee, the crowd didn’t know what to do but watch in disbelief. While it was the final year of Lee in college, watching him go with a loss was something nobody expected. Today, however, 125lbs top rankers fall faster than a deck of cards thanks to the Purdue Boilermakers wrestler.

The category has now become a free-for-all territory for every wrestler. Even true freshmen like Braeden Davis of Penn State are now pulling off big upsets in the weight class. Moreover, even high school wrestlers are taking down top-ranking 125-pounders in open competitions.

Notably, the 2023-24 season has witnessed more than seven different wrestlers bag and lose the first rank in the 125lbs category. In light of this fragility every step of the way, what are the odds of the Purdue Boilermakers star maintaining his top spot? Especially when this is the second time Ramos is number one.

Act two of Purdue Boilermakers star to remain permanent?

The continuous shuffling of the first-ranking wrestlers has now put the Purdue Boilermakers star as the new status quo holder. But, while Matt Ramos had lost the crown previously, this season has witnessed him torpedo through many top wrestlers. Starting things for his team, Matt Ramos recently defeated the previous number-one wrestler Drake Ayala for the first rank.

This was the second time when a top Iowa Hawkeye perished to Ramos to make him climb the highest step of the ladder. To solidify his position, Ramos then secured more wins along the way. However, he also lost a lot of matches at the beginning of the season, so he is very much susceptible to the 125lbs curse. Do you think that the Purdue Boilermakers star will be able to elude the curse of his own making?
