Spencer Lee’s victory at the Olympic Team Trials on April 19 at Bryce Jordan Center showcased his potential for the Paris Olympics. However, his journey isn’t going to be a smooth one. The competition is going to be tough. A recent social media post pointed out who might be wrestler Lee will see in the ring for the Olympics. A significant hurdle in the form of Alireza Sarlak, Iran’s formidable world silver medalist will come on Lee’s way to Paris.

Flowrestling’s recent Instagram post on 1st May points out the fact. The caption reads, “Spencer Lee may have to beat 2021 world silver medalist Sarlak of Iran to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The last chance to qualify for Paris starts in Istanbul on May 9 and will continue till May 13.

The accompanying clip provided insight into how the competition promises to be intense. Meanwhile, wrestlers from countries like Georgia and Kazakhstan are also vying for Olympic qualification. But Iran holds a distinct place in the wrestling realm.

Iran’s wrestlers make some formidable opponents on the world stage

Iran has a rich history of producing Olympic wrestling stars, and Alireza Sarlak and Ahmad Javan are the next generation of legends on the rise. With only one of them set to face off against Lee, the stakes are high. In 2022, Sarlak narrowly lost to Javan in the Takhti Cup finals, missing out on a chance to join the world team. However, Sarlak’s credentials are impressive, having reached the finals of the 2021 World Championships and securing a U23 world bronze medal in 2019, along with an Asian silver in 2021. Javan, though less decorated, claimed silver at the 2021 World Military Championships.

Another decorated Iranian wrestler Hassan Yazdani is considered as the arch-rival of David Taylor. Although Yazdani lost out to David in the 2023 world championships, his prowess can not be denied.

It’s worth noting that the United States hasn’t secured a spot for the Olympics at 57 kg. This means that at 57 kg, the wrestler will need to finish in the top 3 at the World Olympic Games Qualifier to qualify for the Olympics. Unlike the World Championships, where participation is open to all countries, only 16 countries secure Olympic berths at each weight class. Team USA’s attempts to qualify at 57 kg faltered when Zane Richards missed the top 5 at the 2023 World Championships and fell short of the finals at the Pan-Am Qualifier. It remains to be seen if the USA can break through the Iranian wall in the upcoming world qualifiers.
