Episode 1470 of Howes’ podcast featured Shiffrin talking about removing the negativity to climb the stairs of success. The Olympic champion started the conversation by talking about her dreams to be in the Olympics. She spoke about how she manifested being the youngest Olympic gold medalist in history and was just 18 years old when she attained the title. Shiffrin also stated that she had developed her philosophy while she watched Miller handle the ups and downs.
Shiffrin admitted that she always admired Miller when it came to the Olympics, stating, “I think what maybe helped me sort of steer away from having the big, big Olympic dream was seeing some of what he experienced through the Olympics.” She is completely aware of how talking about the process goes and she refuses to take the bait from individuals who desire a juicy, goal-driven narrative. Shiffrin only wants to focus on being a good skier and ski well and be the best in the world someday.
When Lewis asked about what is harder to tackle, failure or success, the 2x Olympic gold medalist answered the question by explaining the phases of her career. She had an injury in December 2015 and prior to that she had set the record for the largest margin of victory in a World Cup Slalom. After recovering from the injury, when she came back in February, she achieved three more slalom victories. After this she was taken aback by the narrative people were changing. She expressed, “I had never experienced a victory where people put such a negative spin on it.”
