On 12th July 2023, the sporting world will be brought to a standstill, when they all tune in to ABC Network’s prime sporting award function, the ESPY Award. As all the topmost athletes who performed exceptionally well in the last calendar year congregate at Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, and only the Best will take home the ESPY. With less than two weeks left, while everyone is voting for their favorite athlete to win, the skiing community seems to have chosen someone already as their favorite in the ‘Female Category’.

Mikaela Shiffrin, a legend in alpine skiing, on the back of her spectacular performances one after another in 2022, seems to be a strong contender to take home the award. The skiing community, spearheaded by Shiffrin’s friend Ron Kruszewski, also wants her to take home the award on 12th July and is pulling every string they have in supporting her.

Mikaela Shiffrin took to her Instagram story and wrote, “Thank you Ron and @stifelfinancial!!” for a note written by Ron Kruszewski. It read, “Vote Mikaela Shiffrin ESPY Female Athlete of the Year” in all caps and bold letters, highlighting the main purpose behind his message. It went on, “I am posting this to advocate for my friend Mikaela Shiffrin, a finalist for Best Athlete in Women’s Sports at this year’s ESPY Awards”. Krusweski clearly didn’t hesitate one bit in supporting her friend.

The note further read, “Mikaela dominated alpine skiing in 2023, recording 14 wins in 31 World Cup starts and winning the season title in the overall, slalom.” The 3-time Winter Olympic medalist also won the gold medal at the World Championships this year in giant slalom. She also took home medals in super-G and slalom.

She might have tough competition ahead

Mikaela Shiffrin might’ve dazzled everyone with her performance last year, but she wasn’t the only one. The other competitors with Shiffrin are Sophia Smith, who plays soccer for the Portland Thorns FC, Iga Swiatek in tennis, and A’ja Wilson, who plays basketball for the Las Vegas Aces. Until all the votes are in, it can never be guessed who will take home the ESPY Award for Best Female Athlete among them. And just like Shiffrin, each of their performances shines through.

Besides her stellar performances on ice with a ski, Shiffrin is also a leading voice on social causes. Earlier this year, she also raised concerns about climate change and wanted everyone to step up and take action. While the ESPY awards are still almost a fortnight away, Shiffrin is happy to see the support for her at the moment.
