Nebraska’s volleyball enthusiasm is peaking as the Omaha Supernovas are shining in the Real Pro Volleyball league. Irrespective of setbacks and injuries, the Supernovas have fought hard to get a decisive win against the San Diego Mojo after a loss in their opener against the Atlanta Vibe. After clinching its first-ever win in the ongoing league’s inaugural 2024 season, the US professional volleyball team Omaha Supernovas announced some important changes in its team composition.

The Supernovas recently revealed a major shuffle in its coaching staff. In a major change in the team dynamics, the present head coach was moved to a new position while bringing a new interim head coach. Alongside, the rank of the assistant head coach was also changed.

Omaha Supernovas also took to its official X handle to announce the changes in its leadership. The caption gives the insights of the release “Today, the Omaha Supernovas announced head coach Shelton Collier will serve as an Advisor to the Organization and named assistant coach, Laura “Bird” Kuhn, as the interim Head Coach. Additionally, former Creighton volleyball standout, Jazz Schmidt, joins the Supernovas’ impressive coaching staff as an assistant coach and operations assistant,” the caption reads.

According to the Omaha Supernovas’ release, the team upgraded the role of the head coach Shelton Collier. He will now serve as the team advisor to the Pro Volleyball Federation. After getting into the new role, Shelton Collier expressed gratitude to be part of the victorious team,

“I am appreciative of the opportunity to have been the head coach for the Supernovas. I am proud of the talented roster we assembled and am very proud of the teams’ development and performance. The players receive tremendous support from the ownership group, the staff, the media, and the incredible fans, and they are well-positioned for a championship run this season and, in the future, as well,” Collier said.

Besides that, the former head coach of the Omaha Supernovas, Collier also revealed his excitement about the Pro Volleyball Federation’s success in the forthcoming years. He is now looking forward to watching this league develop and flourish this year and in the coming years. Meanwhile, the new interim head coach and assistant head coach also stand out in their respective roles.

The team and coaching staff embrace the transition

For his splendid leadership skills, Assistant Coach Laura “Bird” Kuhn got the promotion. He will now give guidance to the team players as the head coach. Kuhn served as the head coach for the Texas A&M volleyball program from 2018-2022. Kuhn was named the 2019 SEC Coach of the Year after leading the Aggies to a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament. She will be joined by another standout in the coaching ranks.

Former Creighton volleyball standout Jazz Schmidt has joined the team as an assistant coach and operations assistant. Schmidt was an All-American opposite and setter during her time at Division II Palm Beach Atlantic University before transferring to Creighton for her final collegiate season in 2022.

Referring to the changes, Omaha Supernovas president Diane Mendenhall said,  “With the Supernovas off to a tremendous start, we need to expand our operations in preparations for our immediate future needs.” However, the permanent coach of Omaha Supernovas is yet to be decided. The organization is looking for a permanent coach throughout the country. Embracing the changes, the Supernovas will be facing the Vegas Thrill at the CHI Health Center arena on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
