Never can you discount the powerhouse that is the Nebraska volleyball team. Despite taking an unexpected loss at the hands of Penn State yesterday, the Huskers bounced back in stellar style today at Maryland. At the final match of the regular season, Merritt Beason and Co. trampled over the Terrapins, and are en route to share the Big Ten title with the Nittany Lions. But it wasn’t the only impressive feat by John Cook’s girls from the night.
Over the years, Nebraska volleyball has become one of the biggest reasons for the growing popularity of the sport in the country. Huskers fans are also never shy to return the favor and their presence in the stands helps the players considerably. And it wasn’t any different on Saturday, with Maryland also achieving a new milestone thanks to the visitors.
The official Big Ten volleyball shared scenes from Xfinity Center’s makeshift volleyball court tonight. In the post from November 30 on X, it can be seen that the hosts had a full house for Nebraska’s last match of the Big Ten season. “The #B1GVolleyball fans came out in full force to watch @TerpsVolleyball and No. 2 @HuskerVB,” reads the caption of the post, while the accompanying video spills another incredible detail.

“Terps break their (volleyball) attendance record at Xfinity Center,” the recent social media update notes. According to Huskers Illustrated’s Lincoln Arneal, the previous record number was 4,522, and tonight, the Nebraska squad won the match in front of a staggering 13,071 fans. For obvious reasons, the Big Ten’s jubilation seeing the sport gain exposure is justified.

Huskers’ HC also revealed previously that over 10,000 tickets had been sold for the match. And yet, despite the large crowd, the hosts were handed a shattering 25-27 25-14 25-8 25-12 loss by the visiting team. With 19 kills, Merritt Beason led the attacking charge, with able aid from Haper Murray (12) and Andi Jackson (7). Outside hitter Lexi Rodriguez once again showed her elite skills with 14 digs along with 3 assists at tonight’s victory. However, while Maryland got its first taste of how it feels to have thundering crowds cheering behind you, the Huskers aren’t alien to such enigmatic moments by any means.
