The Ohio State Buckeyes volleyball team showed their appreciation for Sarah Sue Morbitzer’s mother in their recent match. Their exceptional libero, with a great demonstration of cooperation and volleyball community spirit, was showcased. Sarah’s mother, Carole Morbitzer, was just diagnosed with breast cancer. The players donned “Here to Win” T-shirts before their game versus Minnesota, filled with confidence.

Carole Morbitzer is a valued teacher, wife, and volleyball coach who has been committed to finding a cure for breast cancer. She initiated the fight after she learned that one of her former players,  had been weeping after a game because her mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer. How was she supported by the community which she has been helping for years?

Dedicated coach receives community’s love and support

Carole Morbitzer has helped many of her player’s mothers who have been affected by breast cancer and has been one of the most active volunteers in the battle against the disease. Susan G. Komen for the Cure, an organization that is a frontrunner in the battle against breast cancer, honored her with the Outstanding Individual Volunteer Award. Lindsey who is a former player Morbitzer coached was the spark that led her to take the initiative. After Lindsey conveyed her mother’s problems to Carole, she enrolled her school into the High School Team Challenge Program.

Carole upon knowing that Lindsey’s mother had terminal breast cancer supported her mentally and in an interview told “I stood there in the rain with Lindsey, her head on my shoulder and we both cried.” After hearing that Carole had been diagnosed with breast cancer, the OSU with her daughter wore matching shirts as a show of solidarity. The commentator on Big Ten volleyball was effusive in her praise of the players’ close friendships. She mentioned the support shown for Carole, by the community.

The community is now repaying the kindness that she had been spreading. Carole Morbitzer is a tireless volunteer who has organized many campaigns to raise money and awareness for the battle against breast cancer. The annual Volley for the Cure event in Hamilton received $6,000 thanks to her efforts in recruiting 200 student volunteers and attracting 816 teams to participate in the Race for the Cure. The group in Nebraska was so moved by her efforts that they decided to start their own awareness campaign.

Volleyball community unites for breast cancer awareness

An increasing number of women are being diagnosed with breast cancer, and the volleyball community is starting to take action. The Nebraska volleyball team held a CHI Health-sponsored Breast Cancer Awareness event on October 27, 2023, with Carole as one of the main motivators in the battle. Their tremendous level of team spirit, which hasn’t been broken yet, will inspire the patients and their families.

Sarah Sue, the libero for the Ohio State Buckeyes volleyball team, let her team know about her mom, Carole’s breast cancer diagnosis during a recent match versus the Minnesota Gophers. Carole had helped several of her players’ mothers through similar experiences, so when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, her team and the community rallied behind her and her family.

Carole Morbitzer says “I tell my students right at the beginning, ‘You all know I’m going to cry!’ They always laugh because they know! I tell them, ‘Be prepared to cry also. You are going to have fun, but you are also going to realize that you are a part of something bigger than you could imagine.”

The battle against breast cancer is becoming well-known, and many more people are embracing the cause as seen with the Nebraska volleyball team that had conducted an awareness campaign.
