Nebraskan business stalwart Rod Yates has been making some big splashes with national sports bodies lately. Yates is the mind behind the 2000-acre Good Life District near Gretna and also runs the Nebraska Crossing Shopping Center. Speaking about making Nebraska Volleyball the new home of USA Volleyball, Yates noted that he’s in the final stages of securing a deal.
According to the Omaha World Herald, Yates said, “It’s going to be about a $150- to $200-million-dollar facility… And they’re going to relocate 100 Olympic athletes. You’re going to see all their corporate staff, their training staff, relocate to Gretna, and be a big part of our community.” These athletes and facilities will see Nebraska Volleyball as their new frontrunner.
The current headquarters of USA Volleyball are in Anaheim, California. Yates’ plan came during a discussion of the Legislative Bill 1374 which will allow him certain tax incentives to go ahead with the move. Interestingly, Yates noted that he wasn’t alone behind this big and influential move. He received aid from the biggest monolith of Nebraska Volleyball.

Rod Yates mentioned that he straightaway got in touch with Nebraska Huskers HC John Cook when the law was passed last year. He consulted the Nebraska Volleyball giant and asked him how he could bring USA Volleyball to their state. Cook didn’t beat about the bush and immediately established Yates’ contact with USA Volleyball’s CEO, Jamie Davis.
Cook, who provided testimony during the trial, stated that he facilitated a visit for those involved in the program. This visit included attending the Nebraska Volleyball Day event at Memorial Stadium, which attracted a crowd of 92,003 spectators and set a new world record for a women’s sporting event.

Supporting this move, John Cook noted, “To me, it’s just a beautiful opportunity for a USA program. And volleyball, as you know, is pretty big now and getting bigger.” He also noted that the facilities in Anaheim are “abysmal” and Nebraska can do a great job of being a “one-stop place” for all national volleyball needs. Will Yates and Cook get through with USA Volleyball and make Nebraska the new center of American volleyball?
