Does Nebraska Volleyball's success reflect the power of fan support, or is it all about skill?

A big part of watching sports at a stadium, whether it’s an open-air or indoor arena, is the atmosphere. Wherever there’s the option, many fans prefer to enjoy their favorite sport with some food and drinks. Unfortunately, many University of Nebraska women’s volleyball fans didn’t have the option to crack open a cold one while watching the Huskers play.

However, that’s about to change. On October 4, the Board of Regents at NU voted on a proposal to allow a***olic beverages to be sold during games. The regents voted 7-1 in favor of selling b**r at the Husker’s home, the Devaney Center. However, there’s a catch, and that’s the fact that the policy won’t come into effect until the 2025-26 NCAA season.

So fans who’ve been willing to buy b**r during Nebraska Huskers games will have to wait one more season. However, the Nebraska Huskers Women’s Volleyball won’t be the only ones that fall under the policy change. NU’s football team also got the green light to sell the beverages when the 2025-26 season begins next year. However, selling a***ol at NCAA games is common practice.

Memorial Stadium, the NU football team’s home ground, is the only Big 10 venue that doesn’t sell b**r. University of Nebraska system president said that the approval of the b**r sale proposal would generate additional revenue and support the university’s safety programs. Dr. Jeffrey Gold said the issue was an “important discussion point” for quite some time.

“We are fully committed to using this opportunity to increase our investment in studying the outcomes of these changes and investing in safety initiatives,” the NU system president told 1011 News. Surprisingly, this isn’t the first time the NU Board of Regents has allowed such beverages inside stadiums in the past. Only volleyball and football were previously left out.

NU volleyball and football join three other sports

In 2022, the NU Board of Regents amended its sales policy to include the Huskers baseball, softball, and basketball teams. This change came after the board allowed a***ol sales based on venues and special events. Following the amendment, Pinnacle Bank Arena, the home Huskers Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams, started selling a***ol during the 2022-2023 season.

Haymarket Park, aka, the Huskers Baseball team’s home ground, alongside NU Softball’s Bowlin Stadium, started selling beverages during the 2023-2024 NCAA season. NU volleyball fans have already enjoyed b**r at a special event. On Wednesday 30, 2023, the Nebraska Huskers set a world attendance record for women’s sports hosting 92,003 fans, many of whom had b**r.

Who knows? Huskers Volleyball may even inherit a unique b**r-related record at Devaney Center. According to The Cornhuskers on SI, the NU Men’s baseball team has remained “officially undefeated when b**r has been allowed at Haymarket Park.” It’s also crucial to note that no a***ol-related issues have happened during NCAA events. Although not confirmed, that could’ve played a part during the voting process. Yet, what are your views on a***olic beverages at NCAA level events? Let us know in the comments.
