During an off-season, Big Ten volleyball teams are making headlines for either adding or removing a player from their team’s roaster. But, one team is not on the same track. Interestingly, Northwestern University is undergoing a recent change as the team’s head coach is not accompanying the team in its 2024 volleyball season.
Last year, the Northwestern volleyball team made waves on the internet by parting ways with its head coach. The University made a controversial decision about the head coach after he completed his eight seasons of offering coaching excellence to the students. But why did “unquestionably one of the top coaches in the nation, in any sport,” depart?

Northwestern University, after two months of igniting discussions about the departure of their head coach Shane Davis, made an official announcement. Recently, it took to its Twitter account and posted a message about it, “Volleyball Head Coach Shane Davis and Northwestern Athletics Mutually Agree To Part Ways.” However, there remains some room for speculation in the announcement.

As per the recent post by Lincoln Arneal, Shane Davis was “fired” from the team two months ago. Right now, Erica Handley is the only coach listed on its roster page.
Referring to the decision, Northwestern’s athletic director Derrick Gragg said, “We would like to thank Coach Davis for everything he has done over his eight seasons leading our volleyball program. We have mutually agreed that based on the performance of the program during his tenure, it is time for a change in leadership.”
During his eight-season tenure, Shane Davis, guided the team in their 103-128 overall and 45-105 conference matches record-making. However, Davis never found success in making the Wildcats achieve a Big Ten record and even failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. But, this might not be the only reason for not enlisting the coach for the upcoming season. In addition to the team’s on-court struggle, Davis brought additional tension to the off-court scrutiny.

According to the reports by Inside NU, the Northwestern team confirmed that Davis was “suspended” last year. He faced this major decision after being involved in the “hazing of a volleyball player“. However, Northwestern never made a public disclosure about the incident. Meanwhile Northwestern University is in troubled waters at the moment.
It has been two months after the removal of Shane Davis from the post of head coach. However, till now, there has been no official announcement regarding the recruitment of a new coach for the team. According to Lincoln Arneal’s Twitter post, he said, “After firing Shane Davis two months ago, Northwestern has not yet hired a coach.“

He further added, “It’s a bad look no matter if it stems from a lack of a plan, lowball offers or just general indifference.” As the 2024 volleyball season will be kick-starting in a few months, the Northwestern Volleyball team is required to recruit a head coach urgently to cope with the indifference. Will Northwestern Athletics be able to fill the vacancy soon?
